Two life science giants are joining forces in Gothenburg
American life science company Thermo Fisher Scientific, which is establishing a European bioanalytical laboratory in Gothenburg, has also announced a research and development partnership with the AstraZeneca BioVentureHub.
The partnership aims to leverage the combined expertise of Thermo Fisher and AstraZeneca.
“This is a unique opportunity to co-locate with AstraZeneca scientists, driving collaborative innovation, strengthening the science ecosystem and driving value generation for all collaborators, giving easy access to cutting edge technologies for emerging life sciences and biotech companies as well as academic groups,” said Leon Wyszkowski, president, analytical services, clinical research, Thermo Fisher Scientific in a press release.

A dedicated team from Thermo Fisher will co-locate with AstraZeneca scientists to work on collaborative R&D projects. The initial focus will be on chromatography, molecular genomics and proteomics. Personell from Thermo Fisher will join on site in October.
“When two global life science leaders join forces in an open innovation environment, truly exceptional conditions for breakthrough discovery and progress are created,” said Magnus Björsne, CEO, AstraZeneca BioVentureHub.
“We are pleased to welcome the Thermo Fisher team and look forward to a highly productive partnership,” he said.
The BioVentureHub is based at AstraZeneca’s large research and development campus in Gothenburg. It forms part of the expanding GoCo Health Innovation City, which will also host Thermo Fisher’s bioanalytical laboratory, expected to begin operations in March 2026.
“This partnership is not only significant for AstraZeneca and Thermo Fisher, but also for the wider innovation ecosystem we have been building in Gothenburg together with many ecosystem partners over the last decade. It exemplifies a shift from simply welcoming companies offering services and products to those interested in co-creating across sectors and borders, which is central for our growth vision,” says Iris Öhrn, investment advisor for life science at Business Region Göteborg, Gothenburg’s economic development agency.
In April this year, Thermo Fisher Scientific was awarded the Key to Gothenburg, for its investment in the region.
The new bioanalytical laboratory will create up to 140 new jobs for scientific researchers and lab staff, and further enhance the region’s already strong life science community. The state-of-the-art facility will serve pharmaceutical and biotech customers in Europe and across the globe.
