Thermo Fisher Scientific receives the Key to Gothenburg
The world leader in serving science, Thermo Fisher Scientific, will open a new European lab operation in Gothenburg. Yesterday, Leon Wyszkowski, president of analytical services for clinical research, received the Key to Gothenburg, on behalf of Thermo Fisher during a ceremony at the City Hall.
The PPD™ clinical research business of Thermo Fisher Scientific will expand its bioanalytical presence in Europe and has chosen Gothenburg, Sweden, as a base for its expansion of support services in drug development. A new bioanalytical laboratory will open in GoCo Health Innovation City later this year, creating up to 140 new jobs for scientific researchers and lab staff.
”The fact that a global life science company like Thermo Fisher Scientific, chooses to expand in Gothenburg is a sign of strength for us as a region. We welcome the new advanced jobs, and the fact that our knowledge-intensive life science sector is growing. This strengthens Gothenburg's competitiveness and attractiveness in general. There are several reasons why Thermo Fisher now gets the Key to Gothenburg,” said Jonas Attenius, Mayor of Gothenburg.
The key was awarded during a ceremony in the City Hall yesterday afternoon, hosted by the City of Gothenburg and Business Region Göteborg. AstraZeneca Sweden was also present through CEO Per Alfredsson.
Large expected effect from the lab
”We are honoured to receive the Key to Gothenburg as it represents the impact that the expansion of our bioanalytical lab will play in allowing us to continue to accelerate drug discovery and development through advanced technology and collaboration,” said Leon Wyszkowski, president, analytical services, clinical research, Thermo Fisher Scientific. “As medicines become more complex and personalized, developing bioanalytical assays with greater detectability continues to be a very important part of the development cycle, and we look forward to being able to continue to serve our customers through this new facility.”
The business will expand its bioanalytical capabilities to include comprehensive and full-service solutions, encompassing both small and large molecules, biomarkers and novel modalities. Service offerings will include a wide range of advanced technologies and methodologies, such as cell-based assays, chromatography, flow cytometry, immunochemistry and molecular genomics.
The company expects to hire a wide range of roles with particular skillsets, including advanced degree scientists, lab support, supply chain, and receiving and storing, to support the lab expansion.
”This investment demonstrates the importance of the Gothenburg region in Nordic and European drug development. We work daily to consolidate Gothenburg's already strong position in life science, and support new establishments and investments,” said Patrik Andersson, CEO of Business Region Göteborg. “I am also very pleased to see that GoCo, in a short period of time, has developed into a very attractive environment for global life science companies.”
