Connecting health-tech with Gothenburg at Vitalis

Between 4 and 7 May, Vitalis takes place in Gothenburg, the Nordic region’s leading meeting place for the future of health, care and social services. With a strong focus on eHealth, welfare technology and innovation, Vitalis brings together key stakeholders from the public sector, academia, politics and industry to shape more sustainable healthcare systems.

Business Region Göteborg is of course present to highlight Gothenburg as a destination for both national and international investment. With companies both large and small choosing to invest here, the region continues to strengthen its position as a dynamic life science and health-tech hub.

“Behind this development is a unique combination of scientific and technological expertise, a supportive ecosystem and a strong culture of collaboration. We are home to a mix of innovative companies and leading academic competence. We are also seeing large investments in infrastructure and innovation environments,” says Iris Öhrn, Investment Advisor within life science at Business Region Göteborg.

A region combining health-tech, AI and ICT

For more than a decade, Iris has supported companies and investors looking to tap into Gothenburg’s advantages. And the region has a lot going on. Thermo Fisher Scientific has recently established a new European laboratory operation, Mölnlycke Health Care has moved into a new global headquarters, and major initiatives such as Sahlgrenska Life further reinforce the region’s innovation capacity.

A key factor behind Gothenburg’s attractiveness is its collaborative environment. Companies benefit from access to specialised service providers, expert consultants and innovation enablers offering support in areas such as regulation, clinical testing, digital development and international expansion.

“For health-tech companies, Gothenburg offers something quite unique. Strong life science clusters exist side by side with advanced IT and AI competence. This multi-sector environment makes it easier to develop, test and scale new solutions,” says Iris.

Gothenburg is particularly strong at the intersection of health-tech and digitalisation. Alongside leading life science companies, the region hosts a large number of ICT and AI-driven companies, creating a natural match for the development of data-driven healthcare solutions.

Global leaders and innovative SMEs side by side at Vitalis

The Gothenburg region is home to around 600 life science companies employing approximately 10,000 people. The ecosystem has a mix of large global leaders – AstraZeneca, Getinge, Essity, Dentsply Sirona, Cochlear Bone Anchored Solutions and Mölnlycke Health Care – a strong startup scene and one of Europe’s largest university hospitals. It also has excellent sustainability credentials and boasts Sweden’s highest concentration of both engineers and natural scientists.

One of the Gothenburg-rooted companies present at Vitalis is Getinge, a global medtech company with its headquarters in the city. At the fair, Getinge showcases its digital health solutions focused on improving efficiency, safety and transparency in healthcare operations. Several of these solutions are already widely used in Denmark, and through its participation at Vitalis, Getinge now aims to strengthen its presence in the Swedish market.

At Vitalis, other global companies such as AstraZeneca and Microsoft meet a vibrant community of smaller health-tech firms focusing on AI, digital platforms and connected care.

“While it is important that global companies continue to choose Gothenburg for strategic investments, it is equally significant that so many highly innovative SMEs establish themselves here,” Iris explains.

“They bring agility, new perspectives and technological creativity to the ecosystem.”
