Mölnlycke, a leading medical solutions company, has announced it is relocating its headquarters to the growing life science cluster GoCo Health Innovation City in Mölndal, Gothenburg. The move is scheduled to be completed in late 2024.

The Gothenburg company, which is currently headquartered in Gamlestaden, in the city’s north-east, will move into a newly built 16,000 sqm office, with capacity for 800 people.

“We are delighted to take the next steps towards realizing a new head office in world-class. The new headquarters will be built from scratch and will be entirely based on our needs and will include, among other things, a first-class R&D facility, flexible collaboration spaces and a fantastic working environment,” said Zlatko Rihter, president and group CEO at Mölnlycke, in a statement.

An expanding life science and health cluster

The new facility will be located at the heart of GoCo Health Innovation City, where the district beside AstraZeneca’s R&D centre is under development. The plans include, for example, new offices, co-working spaces, hotels, restaurants, cafes, and accommodation for students and researchers.

The SEK multi-billion project broke ground in early 2020 and the first new tenant, Fujirebio Diagnostics, moved into a 8,000 sqm facility in September 2021. When complete, the new parts of GoCo will have space for up to 350 companies and 7,000 people. The vision for the area is to bring together companies, researchers, entrepreneurs and talent from around the world to share ideas and collaborate to find tomorrow's health innovations.

“These types of initiative are very positive for the region. Apart from the obvious advantages in terms of new companies and employment, I see the value of gathering companies and organisations from different industries in a relatively small area. In this case, they all have a common denominator, namely improving health and well-being.  Also, the fact that GoCo HIC is bringing together large and small innovative companies as well as academia, civil society and healthcare providers will allow for more knowledge to flow and more innovations to flourish. All for ensuring sustainable economic growth and healthy living,” says Iris Öhrn, investment advisor for life science at Business Region Göteborg.

The Mölndal area is an important hub for Gothenburg’s life science sector. Apart from Astra Zeneca’s R&D site, which has over 2,000 employees, Essity, Dentsply Sirona, Wellspect, Fujirebio and Smith & Nephew also have major operations in the area. It’s also in close proximity to Gothenburg’s two universities, the university hospital and Sahlgrenska Science Park.

“The relocation to GoCo Health Innovation City also means that we will be even closer and more linked to Gothenburg's leading life science-cluster, further supporting our R&D intense business and our ambition to become a global leader in medical products and solution, to serve our customers even better,” said Mölnlycke's Zlatko Rihter.
