Gothenburg: driving the future of mobility

There are few regions in the world that have a complete cluster in automotive and mobility. Gothenburg is one of them. Here we have everything from development and test arenas to universities and serial production. A dynamic industrial landscape where groundbreaking ideas in sustainable transportation and battery technology are transformed into successful global products and services.

Collaboration and innovation are our key strengths, enabling the green and digital transition of our industry. Gothenburg has a long tradition of industry, academia and the public sector working together. We continue to build on this, and we are increasingly seeing cross-sector initiatives and new approaches.

There is no better place for any person or company keen to drive progress and play a key role in the transition to electric, connected and sustainable mobility.

Gothenburg - leading the way in electromobility

In Gothenburg we are electrifying cars, trucks, boats and planes, and we are building up a sustainable battery industry. Just a few of the reasons why we are leading the way in electromobility.

A global hub for next-generation vehicle development

The transition towards sustainable transport is underway, with electrification increasing particularly in cars, but also in commercial vehicles, boats and aviation. Major players like Volvo Cars, the Volvo Group, Polestar and Zeekr Technology are driving the shift from Gothenburg. Here, they are supported by a strong collaborative approach and excellent testing infrastructure, including Gothenburg Green City Zone and the Swedish Electric Transport Laboratory (SEEL).

At the same time, Gothenburg is at the forefront of software-defined and connected mobility. Advanced capabilities in AI, connectivity and user experience are shaping the next generation of vehicles. Companies such as WirelessCar, Ericsson and Coretura are developing leading solutions for connected services and in-vehicle intelligence.

Safety remains a cornerstone of Gothenburg’s ecosystem, a strong heritage shaped by Volvo. Local companies such as Kognic, Zenseact and Smart Eye are using AI and advanced technologies to make the roads safer. Innovations in autonomous driving, data-driven safety systems and large-scale testing environments including AstaZero reinforce the region’s position as a hub for vehicle safety.

Gothenburg is attracting major investments in mobility

  • The Volvo Group is investing heavily in Campus Lundby, its global headquarter and innovation campus in Gothenburg. The site brings together Volvo Group’s management and development operations, and offers co-location opportunities for innovative companies within transport, service development, and electric mobility. The truck and bus maker is also building a large-scale battery plant in Mariestad, two hours north-east of Gothenburg.
  • During the summer of 2025, Volvo and Daimler launched the software company Coretura in Gothenburg. The joint-venture company has the mission of building a standardised software-defined vehicle platform and dedicated commercial vehicle operating system.
  • In recent years, Volvo Cars has made major upgrades to its Gothenburg plant in preparation for production of the EX60 and other next-generation electric cars. It has invested around SEK 10 billion (approximately EUR 1 billion), and has introduced mega casting capabilities, a new battery assembly plant, and refurbished its paint and final assembly shops.
  • Volvo Cars has also built a large-scale facility near its Torslanda production plant, where in the coming years, together with a technology partner, it aims to produce battery cells for its electric vehicles.
  • Steptura and Volvo Cars are investing in the large-scale innovation neighbourhood, Näst Innovation Destination Torslanda, located beside Volvo Cars' campus in Torslanda. It will offer facilities and environments for testing and development, and gather actors within sustainable mobility.
  • Geely continues to grow in Gothenburg. The company has established the Uni3 innovation campus, which gathers around 4,000 people and is home to Zeekr Technology Europe, Lynk&Co and EcarX.
  •  In early 2026, interior auto parts maker Artifex Systems opened a new engineering centre at Lindholmen Innovation District. The Gothenburg site plays key role in developing Artifex System’s next generation interior components, including cockpit systems, dashboards, door trim systems and various types of consoles.

An emerging battery industry

In the coming years, Gothenburg and West Sweden will have in place two battery gigafactories. The region is set to become a key hub in the growing Nordic battery industry.
