On a mission to transform the commercial vehicle industry
In a waterside building in Gothenburg, a bold new player in the commercial vehicle industry is quietly building momentum. Coretura, a tech-driven venture backed by industry giants Volvo and Daimler, is aiming to transform the global truck market - and it’s doing so from the heart of Sweden’s west coast.
As commercial vehicles are becoming more digital and software-driven, the joint-venture company has the mission of building a standardised software-defined vehicle platform and dedicated commercial vehicle operating system. The aim is to launch its first products in vehicles by the end of the decade.
With both Volvo and Daimler’s full truck line-ups riding on Coretura’s platform, the stakes are high. That’s over 600,000 trucks annually, nearly half the global market. But Coretura’s ambitions go beyond its founding partners.
“This isn’t just for Volvo and Daimler. It’s for anyone and everyone. We aim to set a new standard for the commercial vehicle industry,” says Johan Lundén, CEO at Coretura.
Launched in mid-June, Coretura has already grown to a team of around 70 people, representing 14 nationalities. And the plan is to continue growing. By 2030, the company expects to scale to 400-500 employees.
Coretura is actively recruiting both locally and internationally. And not just from automotive, but from other industries too, to bring fresh perspectives to software engineering, data management, cybersecurity and leveraging AI.
“We are striving for a very non-hierarchical organisation. We want to empower people to take their decisions and avoid complex governance,” says Johan Lundén.
Gothenburg - a standout choice
Before its launch, the joint venture company considered a variety of locations for its base. Gothenburg, an emerging tech hub and Sweden’s automotive capital, was a compelling option.
“We looked at many regions. Gothenburg stood out, through a strong balance of factors: talent availability, ecosystem strength, costs, and business conditions. And of course, proximity to one of our founding members helped,” says Johan Lundén.
During the summer the company moved into an office at Lindholmen Innovation District. The area is an important hub for Sweden’s tech and mobility sector, and home to around 400 companies and organisations. It is also just a few kilometres away from the Volvo Group’s global headquarters and campus.
“Lindholmen was a natural fit. We are already enjoying being in close vicinity to many other like-minded companies that are in the software, connectivity and automotive spaces,” he says.
Looking ahead, apart from continuing to build the team, Coretura plans to collaborate with other companies to scale its impact. Strategic partnerships will be key.
“The scope of what we are doing is vast, far beyond what a 400-500-person team could achieve alone. So, we need to partner with select players. And who we partner with will shape the magnitude and specificity of our work,” says Johan Lundén.
