Gothenburg’s exciting tech scene is growing
More and more entrepreneurs are turning their eyes towards Gothenburg and the great opportunities that the city's tech scene offers. Major investments in automotive, mobility and life science mean that the trend is expected to continue – and accelerate.
Gothenburg’s tech scene has experienced rapid growth in recent years, both in terms of the number of start-ups and employees. Andreas Göthberg, Head of Business Development services at Business Region Göteborg, says that many of Sweden's most promising, young technology companies have chosen to establish themselves on the west coast and that more are on their way there.
“To a large extent, it’s connected to the transformation that is taking place in the automotive sector - the strong driving forces in future mobility and sustainability - and of course the large investments that are taking place in our life science sector,” he says.
Right now, work is in full swing to establish a new growth arena for tech companies at Lindholmen. The idea is to strengthen the innovation cluster that already exists by offering a creative and alternative environment.
“In Götaverken's old shipyard environment, in the middle of everything that makes Gothenburg unique, we create the conditions for passionate tech entrepreneurs to challenge today's solutions. We call it The Yard,” says Andreas Göthberg.
Business Region Göteborg works to strengthen the business environment in the Gothenburg. We want to make it easy to start, develop and establish businesses in the region by creating the conditions for sustainable business and more jobs.
Fast growing tech scene
In recent years, tech companies' interest in Gothenburg has grown and large establishments are creating an even greater interest in the city.
“Northvolt and Volvo's joint battery factory, which will employ up to 3,000 people, is a clear example. The multiplier effect in the automotive sector is 2.44. For every job that is connected directly to the battery factory, an additional 2.44 jobs are generated. This enormous growth rate in Gothenburg paves the way for fantastic opportunities, not least for tech companies.”
The venture capital company Wellstreet established operations in Gothenburg at the beginning of 2022. Founding partner Sïmon Saneback says that the step felt natural as both co-investors and tech companies in its portfolio are located in the region.
“We think that Gothenburg has a lot to offer. It’s a fantastic city for business with a long industrial history and a high capacity to innovate. At the same time, we are probably not alone in feeling that it’s a bit crowded in Stockholm. It’s great to see that so many businesses are looking to come here and that successful entrepreneurs invest in companies from here.”
"Just the Beginning"
He says that three of the country's largest companies did the same thing within the same week that Wellstreet announced that they would establish themselves in Gothenburg.
“This will definitely continue; this is probably just the beginning. It's nice that the spotlight is starting to be directed towards the west coast. We got an incredibly nice response from our customers when we took the step here,” says Sïmon Saneback.
