Celebrating five years of International House Gothenburg

More than 250 people representing 57 nationalities gathered in Gothenburg on 21 October for Welcome to Gothenburg, an evening of inspiring stories, new connections and a celebration of five years of International House Gothenburg (IHG), the region’s support service for international professionals and their families.

Organised by IHG, the event brought together international residents, representatives from the public and private sectors, academic institutions and organisations supporting people relocating to the region. The programme combined welcome speeches, personal stories, panel discussions and cultural performances, highlighting what it means to build a life and career in Gothenburg.

“The international community is one of the Gothenburg region’s strengths. We are delighted that people from around the world continue to choose Gothenburg as a place to live, work and develop. They play an important role in our business environment,” says Patrik Andersson, CEO of Business Region Göteborg.

The programme highlighted how employers, public organisations and community initiatives can work together to help international talent settle, find opportunities and build a future in the Gothenburg region.

Internationals also shared their experiences and personal journeys, offering perspectives on the opportunities and challenges of starting a new chapter in Sweden.

“Being on stage to share my story about this new chapter was the best opportunity to share my gratitude for the incredible support I received and give it back to the newcomers in the city,” said Isabelle Coquete, France, Commercial Strategy Lead.

The Mayor of Gothenburg Jonas Attenius welcomed participants, while the programme also featured the presentation of the Key to Gothenburg to Coretura, recognising the company’s establishment and contribution to the region’s competitiveness.

Five years of International House Gothenburg

Welcome to Gothenburg also marked five years of International House Gothenburg, which provides free guidance, activities and opportunities for international residents and their families to connect with employers, organisations and the wider community.

Since its launch, IHG has recorded more than 15,000 interactions, organised almost 500 events and delivered approximately 4,000 individual advisory sessions, both onsite and online.

Through career events, workshops, individual guidance and networking, IHG helps international residents understand the Swedish labour market, explore education and skills-development opportunities, and navigate everyday life, including family life, childcare and schools.

For Birat Bhattacharjee, senior software developer, the evening reflected the importance of creating a place where international residents can feel connected and at home.

“The evening was a wonderful reflection of what International House Gothenburg has built over the years, a place where people from different backgrounds can feel welcomed, connected and at home. Hearing the stories of people who have built their lives here, while also learning about the roots and journey of IHG, was a powerful reminder of how important it is to create a city where internationals are not just welcomed, but truly feel that they belong,” he says.

Reflecting on five years of IHG, Lovisa Bohlin, Manager of IHG, highlights the people and organisations behind its development.

“Reflecting on this five-year journey, I feel immensely honoured to have been part of developing International House Gothenburg from its very first blueprint into the place and supportive community it is today. This milestone would not have been possible without the amazing ecosystem of people and organisations who have contributed along the way," says Lovisa Bohlin.
