Following Northvolt and Volvo Cars’ announcement of a new joint battery manufacturing plant and battery R&D centre in Gothenburg, a growing number of suppliers and service providers are exploring investment opportunities in the region, explains Joel Görsch, our investment advisor for automotive and cleantech.

“It’s still very early in the process, but we have already received multiple enquiries connected to the new battery production plant from companies considering investing in the region. Some of them are direct suppliers, while others are more indirectly connected, for example, related to housing. The new plant is a large-scale activity both during its construction and once it is in place. We are talking about an advanced facility that once complete will employ up to 3,000 people. Indirectly it will also create thousands of new jobs in the region,” says Joel Görsch.

What are your expectations looking ahead?

“In the autumn and winter, as things enter a new phase, I expect we will see more and more action, both in terms of the development process, as well as new investment enquiries and decisions from suppliers and other service providers. Construction is likely to break ground sometime in early 2023, so as I mentioned it is still early days.”

In general, how is the level of interest from companies that want to join our automotive cluster?

“During the pandemic, in 2020, we saw a drop in interest from international companies. But from the autumn of 2020, there has been a big increase in the number of companies enquiring and exploring opportunities in our region. H2X Global, an Australian manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cell powered trucks and light vehicles and Apex.AI, a software development company from California, are two examples of companies we have assisted who have joined our cluster during 2022.”

Have you noticed any trends among the companies who are interested in joining our cluster?

“We have a fantastic automotive and mobility cluster and we are seeing lots of exciting developments connected to, for example, the green transition and digitalization. About 90% of the enquiries from international companies I receive are connected to electrification, digitalization, automonous driving and shared services. It can be companies working with hydrogen, batteries, charging infrastructure and connectivity etc. These are some of the big trend areas globally and Gothenburg is making big advances and has a lot of strengths in these areas.”
