Gothenburg named the Nordics’ best logistics location
The Gothenburg region has been recognised as the Nordic countries' premier logistics region, in a new ranking from the industry magazine Dagens Logistik. The acknowledgement is a testament to the region's strengths in logistics and infrastructure.
“We are very proud of this recognition and see it as proof of our region's strength and continued potential. The strategic location and logistics infrastructure are competitive advantages for our business community,” says Marcus Scoliège , head of foreign direct investments at Business Region Göteborg.
For two decades the Gothenburg region has dominated Intelligent Logistik’s ranking of Sweden’s best logistics location. In Dagens Logistik’s new comparison, the magazine evaluated eight key regions in the Nordic countries.
The Gothenburg region, which included Borås, Halmstad and Skaraborg, topped the list ahead of the Öresund region, which contained Malmö, Helsingborg and Copenhagen; and the Mälardal region, which included Stockholm, Södertälje and Västerås.
The magazine evaluated the regions on the versatility, accessibility and sustainability of logistics infrastructure and took into account goods flows in and through the region, conditions for imports and exports, and proximity to population and consumer markets. It also took into account logistics investments, logistics expertise and workforce, as well as relevant research and education.
In its motivation for placing the Gothenburg region at the top of the list Dagens Logistik writes:
Industrial-heavy Gothenburg, with the Nordics' largest container port and a well-developed railway network, is an important logistics hub for the entire Nordic region, and central for imports as well as exports. In terms of infrastructure, the port is complemented by land-based infrastructure with strong road, rail and air connections (Landvetter Airport), which makes it the logistics center for the Nordic region.
A hub for logistics innovation
Besides excellent logistics infrastructure, Gothenburg is also an innovation hub, with strong industrial clusters, in for example, automotive and mobility, logistics, ICT, chemicals and life science.
The city is home to multiple collaborative initiatives that are driving progress in sustainable logistics and transport. One example is the Tranzero initiative, where the Port of Gothenburg, the Volvo Group, Scania and Stena Line are working together to speed up the transition to fossil-free fuels in the transport sector. Another is Gothenburg Green City Zone, where public, private and academic actors are collaborating, and the city serves as testing ground for developing an emission-free transportation system by 2030.
Through Chalmers and the University of Gothenburg, the region is also Sweden’s leading competence center in transport and logistics-related research and education.
