Dutch engineering company joins Gothenburg’s health innovation cluster
A little over a year ago, Gothenburg’s life science sector caught the eye of Dutch engineering company Demcon life sciences & health. The firm, which has multidisciplinary expertise in medtech, biotech and in-vitro diagnostics, has now established a strategic presence in the region.
Demcon life sciences & health is a key part of the Demcon Group. Founded in the early 90s, the group has grown into an international engineering organisation with over 1,000 engineers supporting companies across Europe, the US and Japan. From product design and product development to manufacturing, they support companies to develop their own solutions and ideas into market-ready products – while ensuring clients retain full IP ownership.
“We fill the gaps where expertise is missing within companies. Nowadays, everything should be smaller and faster, with new materials, AI, quantum and photonics technology involved. It is so complex and almost impossible for companies to have expertise in all these disciplines in-house,” says Raymond Beijen, business developer at Demcon life sciences & health.
Targeting opportunities in Sweden and the Nordics
In September 2024, Gothenburg caught Raymond’s attention. It followed a chat with Iris Öhrn, investment advisor for life science at Business Region Göteborg, during the Nordic partnering event, NLS Days in Malmö.
From there he began looking more deeply into Gothenburg and its strong and R&D intensive life science sector. The region is home to several of Sweden’s largest life science companies, including AstraZeneca, Mölnlycke Health Care, Essity and Getinge. It also has around 100 life science startups and scaleups. Gothenburg’s strength in the medtech industry aligns with the company’soffering in medical device development.
As part of his exploration, Raymond joined a business delegation visiting Gothenburg and Oslo, arranged by the Dutch embassy. In April 2025, he also took part in a healthtech bootcamp in Gothenburg, arranged by Business Region Göteborg. It was three-days of site visits, market insights, practical information and networking with local companies and stakeholders. In addition, he visited an Open House event at GoCo Health Innovation City and was in Gothenburg for the 2025 edition of NLS Days.
“All of these trips and meetings, there was so much positive energy, a really great vibe,” says Raymond Beijen.
A strategic base at GoCo Health Innovation City
In December 2025, the company became a tenant at GoCo House, part of the dense health innovation cluster in Mölndal, Gothenburg. The expanding area has become a hive of activity, gathering around 100 companies and thousands of researchers, professionals and entrepreneurs.
Joining the co-working space is just the beginning. Demcon life sciences & health’s goal is to grow and build a sustainable business here.
Raymond has been in regular contact with Iris since their first encounter. Together with the FDI team at Business Region Göteborg, she has helped him navigate the business environment, provided insights and advice, and connected him with relevant people in Gothenburg’s innovation ecosystem.
“It’s really helped us to get more familiar with people in the network and the technical problems they are facing. And this is really important as business is about people and connections. The most frequent question I receive is: do you incorporate human factors engineering, can we start at any product development phase and is regulatory consulting included. The answer to all of these questions is ‘yes’. That’s why there is so much opportunity for us here,” says Raymond.
‘Our goal is to open the door to Gothenburg’s ecosystem’
Demcon life sciences & health’s journey is a good example of how Business Region Göteborg works long-term with international companies, from the first contact to business case.
“Whether it is through a delegation visit, a fair interaction or contact through our website, our goal is to promote and open the door to Gothenburg’s ecosystem and business opportunities,” says Iris Öhrn.
She adds:
“We are pleased that Demcon life sciences & health now has a presence here and is looking to expand its business in Sweden. We hope that in the future, it leads to long-term investments that strengthen our ecosystem and create knowledge-intensive jobs in the region.”
