    direct employees

  • #1

A hotspot for ICT in the Nordics

ICT is one of Gothenburg’s strongest growth industries, with the number of employees tripling between 2008 and 2021. Leading companies such as Ericsson, Volvo Technology, Saab, Beyond Gravity, Telia, CEVT and HCLTech all have major operations in the region.

Gothenburg also has a fast-growing tech scene with many startups and scale-ups, especially within impact tech. Together with the large companies, they are developing advanced digital technologies, and are a driving force behind sustainable development.

Artificial intelligence, quantum technology, software development, communication and connectivity, mobility, and visualisation and gaming are some our key areas of strength. For example, we are seeing advanced research and development within 5G/6G, microwave communication and quantum computing, where Chalmers university, Ericsson, Saab and Atlantic Quantum are a few of the leading players.

One of our greatest strengths lies in our tradition and culture of collaboration. The private and public sectors, research institutes and academia share knowledge, resources and co-create. This fosters innovation, creates business opportunities and is a key reason behind the strong developments we are seeing in our ICT sector.

In Gothenburg we have well established networks, within for example, microwaves, telematics and IT infrastructure, and many testbeds including the Virtual Gothenburg Lab, a digital twin of the city. We also have open innovation environments, incubators, platforms connecting startups and large corporates, as well as a leading science park that hosts major collaboration projects within AI, mobility and visualisation.
