Gothenburg’s retail industry has seen a long period of growth on the back of a growing economy and population. Meanwhile, extensive urban development and infrastructure plans are creating new space and opportunities for retailers.
Never before has there been so much new retail space opening up. At the same time, both property owners and consumers want more diversity in Gothenburg’s retail and food and beverage offering, and this is creating good possibilities for international companies and products.
Since the year 2000, Gothenburg has seen a 79% increase in GRP and the population has risen by 187,000 people.
In Gothenburg, you’ll find relatively young and well-travelled consumers with high purchasing power. The average spending per person on retail, excluding food and beverage, is about EUR 6,500 (SEK 65,000) per year. In addition, large numbers of tourists visit the region and spend nearly half of their total budget on shopping.
Michael Kors, Tesla, Victoria’s Secret, Starbucks, Picard, Joe and the Juice, Chanel Beauty and Superdry are just a few of the well-known brands that have recently entered Gothenburg’s retail market.
