With an excellent position in the centre of Scandinavia and seamless connections by sea, land and air, Gothenburg is an attractive location for doing business.
Gothenburg is Scandinavia’s leading industry city and a prominent logistics hub. It’s no coincidence that here lies DB Schenker’s head office for northern Europe as well as offices for almost all major transport companies.
For more than a decade Gothenburg has been ranked as Sweden’s number one logistics location by the industry magazine Intelligent Logistik. Just a few of the reasons for the accolade are: the Port of Gothenburg, major new logistics establishments, new available land, well-functioning transport infrastructure, and advanced education programmes and research.
Scandinavia's largest port
Some 30 per cent of Sweden’s foreign trade passes through the Port of Gothenburg as does 60 per cent of the country’s container traffic. The port offers direct services to and from, for example, destinations in Asia, the Middle East, North Africa and North America. It also has strong rail links to and from the whole of Sweden and Norway.
A new one million square metre logistics park is being built directly beside the port. Here there are opportunities for new warehouse and logistics facilities, just 10 minutes from the quayside.
Gothenburg also has a major international airport just 25 kilometres from the city centre. It offers flights to more than 100 destinations from around 30 airline carriers. The airport handles heavy cargo and has one of the fastest air cargo turnarounds in Europe.
Major investments are being made both in the airport as well as its surrounding areas and transport infrastructure. The development is known as Airport City and the plans include, among other things, two logistics parks, retail and business parks as well as hotel and conference facilities. Here you can set up warehouse and logistics facilities next to the airport and a motorway.
Gothenburg is also well connected by land with frequent rail services to large parts of Sweden. In addition, it has major motorways to Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen.
Sweden's strongest research cluster in logistics
Gothenburg’s two universities – Chalmers University of Technology and The University of Gothenburg - are very strong in logistics and both have close ties to industry. They offer popular bachelor and master’s level programmes, and at the same time they have around 100 researchers carrying out world-class logistics research, on for example, green logistics, digitalisation in freight transport and emerging handling technologies.
