Gothenburg named as the best logistics location in Sweden
For the 18th consecutive year, the Gothenburg region been named Sweden’s best logistics location by the industry magazine Intelligent Logistik. This year it scored well ahead of Örebro and Helsingborg, with the Malmö and Stockholm regions down the list in seventh and eighth respectively.
In this year’s ranking, Intelligent Logistik assessed Sweden’s top 25 logistic locations across seven areas including new logistics facilities, the flow of goods, competence, infrastructure and available land.
Gothenburg topped the list with 94 points out of a possible 100. Its nearest rivals were the Örebro and Helsingborg regions with 89 and 86 points respectively.
In terms of new logistics facilities, the Gothenburg region was a long way ahead of all other locations with more than 500,000 sqm added during 2014-2018. A further 190,000 sqm will be added during 2019.
"The region’s strengths are many"
Intelligent Logistik also highlighted the “cutting-edge education and research in logistics” at Gothenburg’s two universities as well as the investments being made in infrastructure.
“The region has prioritised well in its infrastructure plans, including giving the go-ahead to the deepening of the fairways at the Port of Gothenburg, which will allow calling of the very largest container vessels,” it said in its motivation.
According to Intelligent Logistik, the only areas of concern for the region are whether or not it can continue to bring forward plans for new land at the pace that the market demands, and the problem of high freight flows to Norway, where sufficient rail infrastructure is lacking.
Logistics is one of Gothenburg’s key sectors, employing around 30,000 people in the region.
