Gothenburg places highly in investment destination rankings

26 February 2020
Gothenburg was ranked among the top 10 large cities in Europe in multiple categories when fDi presented its report European Cities and Regions of the Future 2020/21 on Europe’s best and brightest investment destinations.

“The rankings are further recognition that the Gothenburg region is transforming at a fast pace and that the region is highly competitive on the global stage when it comes to foreign direct investment,” says Henrik Einarsson, director of business establishment and investment at Business Region Göteborg.

The report is presented every other year by the English publication fDi Magazine, which is part of the Financial Times. 319 cities and 148 regions are evaluated based on future oriented parameters, such as economic potential, use of smart technology and business friendliness.

Gothenburg moves up to the Large cities category

In the previous report two years ago, Gothenburg was ranked highly among mid-sized cities. In this year’s report, Gothenburg moved up to the Large Cities category (a city population of more than 500,000 and at least one million residents in the region). It was among the top 10 cities in three of the six categories.

Gothenburg was ranked 9th overall, 2nd in the category ‘Human capital and lifestyle’ and 5th in the category ‘Business friendliness’.

These further confirm the positive developments taking place in Gothenburg and that the region is well positioned internationally. Gothenburg’s ranking in Human capital and lifestyle, among other things, is due to our well-educated population,” says Henrik Einarsson, director of business establishment and investment at Business Region Göteborg.

When fDi analyses a city’s human capital and lifestyle, apart from education level it considers many factors, such as the number of students, the number of top 500 universities, skillset of graduates, the density of physicians and life expectancy.

“Gothenburg’s population is well-educated and relatively young with access to academic education and world-class companies – all of this contributes to the region becoming even more attractive,” says Henrik Einarsson.

One of the most business-friendly cities

Gothenburg was also ranked among the best large European cities for 'Business friendliness'.

“This ranking is based on how attractive a region is to invest in. It places a lot of weight on the number of hi-tech companies, the number of jobs created by foreign investment and how easy it is to start a company,” says Henrik Einarsson.
