Sustainable development

Sweden is one of the global leaders when it comes to sustainable development and Gothenburg is an important contributor in the area. A key ingredient is that citizens, companies, and politicians are all engaged in the matter. Other important factors have been early adoption and the development of innovative solutions.

A long history of sustainable investments

Gothenburg is home to a leading green-tech cluster and is a living example of sustainable urban development.

As early as the 1950s, Gothenburg made investments in district heating, a system based not on fossil fuels but renewable energy sources and waste heat. And the move has helped Gothenburg – and Sweden – to dramatically reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Today, Gothenburg has world-leading expertise in the area and about 90 per cent of all apartment buildings in the city are connected to our district heating network.

Other areas of strength include renewable energy, waste management, green transport and urban development, to name a few. And each year international decision-makers, companies and academics come here for inspiration and to connect with our companies, institutions and experts - read more about our smart city solutions and international visits.
