R&D

As the driving force in Västra Götaland, the Gothenburg region has developed into a national hub for research and development accounting for just over a third of Sweden's total private investment in corporate R&D. This is the highest share in Sweden, a country that in turn has the third-highest R&D expenditure in the world in relation to its GDP.

1/3

of Sweden's total private investment in corporate R&D is made in the Gothenburg region.

This is confirmation of the ability of the business community in Gothenburg to produce world-leading innovations. The figures also confirm the adjustments made by business life in the region over a long period of time and aimed at achieving a significantly higher knowledge content than has been the case in the past. Whilst Gothenburg may be an old-established industrial and shipyard centre, massive investment in research and development has allowed the city to assume its current position in the world as a driving force for innovation.

The fact that so many national and international companies are investing large sums in R&D in the region is testimony to the unyielding confidence in Gothenburg and the long-term strategic plans at companies to maintain a presence in the area for many years to come.

Companies have chosen to invest in Gothenburg due to the availability of expertise, the proximity to a growing market, and the city's strong automotive, life science, space, and ICT clusters. There is also a long history in Gothenburg of creating innovative environments through broad-based collaboration, including a wide range of testbeds in various fields and the city's successful science parks.
